Evidence released by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine has shown that e-cigarettes use helps adults stop smoking and reduces exposure to toxic substances found in tobacco smoking. This study is actually a review of over 800 peer-reviewed scientific studies. A panel of experts identified and examined the conclusions reached by these studies. These are the main points highlighted.

On exposure to toxic substances

Substantial evidence shows that except for nicotine, exposure to toxic substances from e-cigarettes is significantly lower compared to tobacco smoking.

Dependence and abuse

Moderate evidence shows that risk and severity of dependence to e-cigarette is lower than for conventional cigarettes.

Harm Reduction

There is conclusive evidence that completely substituting e-cigarettes for conventional cigarettes reduces users’ exposure to many toxicants and carcinogens present in conventional cigarettes.

There is substantial evidence that completely switching from regular use of conventional cigarettes to e-cigarettes results in reduced short-term adverse health outcomes in several organ systems.

Use by youth and young adults

There is substantial evidence that e-cigarette use by youth and young adults increases their risk of ever using conventional cigarettes.

Exposure to nicotine

There is substantial evidence that nicotine intake from e-cigarettes among experienced adult e-cigarette users can be comparable to that from conventional cigarettes.

Conclusion

As one can see from these conclusions e-cigarette use is nowadays considered with strong evidence as being substantially safer than smoking, exposing the user to significantly less toxins than smokers. While smoking causes cancer, respiratory disease, there is no evidence that links these conditions with electronic cigarettes. It should however be noted that the use of electronic cigarettes should be discouraged in youths as it has been found that such use is more likely to lead to future tobacco smoking.

The appeal being made to smokers to switch to e-cigarettes continues to gather ground. Our appeal is: if you can’t quit smoking, the safest thing to do is switch to e-cigarettes. This is our driving motto and rational behind our name and website domain: “switchecig.com.”
